Ice dams and icicles are caused from in adequate insulation and ventilation. When snow on the roof is melted from the heat as it escapes the house, it runs to the roof edge where it re-freezes. This can cause ice dams at the roof edge, in the gutter and/or on the gutter protection.

Left unmitigated, this melting water can back up under the shingles, into the house, causing damage to the house. Icicles appear as the melting snow freezes in the gutters, filling them with ice and then overspilling the front lip of the gutter.

First, when possible correct the real problem of inadequate insulation and ventilation. If there is not way to correct the problem, then a solution would be to heat the gutters, downspouts and the MSG GutterHood. We install a radiant heating cable in the gutters and downspouts and along the underside of the MSG GutterHood. This will keep the roof edge and gutter system free of snow and ice during the winter.

Without installing an extensive roof melting system, you can’t completely eliminate snow and ice from the roof.
